[Fix] Point of Sale is unable to open or connect to QuickBooks
When you run a financial exchange and QuickBooks POS for Desktop tries to connect with QuickBooks Desktop, you will face following errors:
- unable to open QuickBooks Point of Sale
- Error code 140014: QuickBooks POS can’t access QuickBooks Financial Software company file
- Error code 140015: Point of Sale could not start a connection with QuickBooks
- Error code 140025: POS was unable to open your QuickBooks Financial Software company file
Reason behind these errors
This may occur when:
- No preference setup for the exchange of data to QuickBooks Desktop.
- QuickBooks Desktop is open but the company file you defined is not open.
- The Preferences window is open in QuickBooks Desktop.
- The QuickBooks file that is defined in the QuickBooks POS for Desktop company preferences either doesn't exist or incorrect company file.
How to fix it
Important: Make sure that QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop and QuickBooks Desktop are updated to the latest version.
Solution 1: Make sure the right file is open and the correct preferences are set in QuickBooks Desktop
- Open the correct company file from QuickBooks Desktop
- Note: To verify the company file location Press F2 in QuickBooks Desktop. If it Shows an incorrect data file:
- choose File and select Open Company in QuickBooks Desktop.
- Select the correct file from the available view
- Verify that sales tax is enabled.
- Go to Edit menu, select Preferences.
- select Sales Tax > Company Preferences tab.
- Click the Yes radio button to turn on sales tax.
- Verify that Inventory is enabled:
- Go to Edit menu, select Preferences.
- select Items & Inventory > Company Preferences tab.
- Put a checkmark on the Inventory and purchase orders are an active box.
- Click OK.
- Now, Verify that the QuickBooks POS for Desktop application is allowed to run in QuickBooks Desktop:
- Log in with the admin userId and password.
- Go to Edit menu, select Preferences.
- Select the Integrated Applications > Company Preferences tab.
- Make sure that Don't allow any applications to access this company file box is not checked.
- From QuickBooks Point of Sale for Desktop, click File > Preferences > Company > Financial > Setup QuickBooks Connection Now. Make sure that the right file is selected.
Solution 2: Create a new Windows user
- Click the Windows Start button and enter User Accounts in the search field. Press Enter.
- Choose Manage another account.
- Click Create a new account, and name the new account Test. select Administrator as the user type.
- Sign in to Windows with the newly created user account.
If the issue still displays, try toggling your User Account Control (UAC) settings off and then back on.
Solution 3: Turn off the UAC preference
- Click the Windows Start button, and enter User Accounts in the search field. Press Enter.
- Select Change User Account Control settings.
- Click to clear the Use User Account Control preference.
- Click OK and restart if prompted.
- Reconnect POS and QuickBooks.
